Hello Opponauts!
I’ve been trying to find a louder horn for my ‘08 Toyota Matrix.
That factory roadrunner meep meep isn’t cutting it anymore when all the polite NY drivers just cut me off willy nilly.
Toyota says they “can’t” (translation: won’t) sell me a replacement/louder horn without a VIN#. They refuse to sell me a horn for a Toyota truck, for instance, if I say I’m putting it in my Matrix.. The dealership has all my info, so going in and just asking if a louder horn is available doesn’t work. They keep referencing the Matrix VIN#, in between sips of the corporate kool aid.
The auto parts shops are basically the same, they need a model and year for the “replacement” horn.
So, are there any horns available that will just plug into my Matrix wiring harness and give me a louder note? I need something that will be heard!!
Thanks in advance.

Came here to make sure someone mentioned Supertones. Left satisfied.

If you’re looking for a horn that will directly plug into the factory harness, you’d probably be better off ordering with just a part number. Most horns will work if you cut the factory harness and splice them in.

Parts stores only list universal horns for the Matrix. You would need to cut and splice the connector. Even RockAuto only lists an AC Delco horn but only by looking up your car twin the Pontiac Vibe. That horn would be no louder than what you have now. A Toyota truck one might work but you may need to get a truck VIN to even get the guys to look at one on the shelf. If it was me I’d splice in the wiring for a pair of Hella Supertones from Summit or Jegs and be done with it. Its doubtful you will find any easily that plug n play with the original harness connector.

Thank you, but that’s part of the problem. The dealership refuses to give me a part number that isn’t for my Matrix.
And, I’d rather not cut anything if I can avoid it. If I have to rig up a separate horn with a button under the dash, I will.

OK, thanks for the information.
If we had any junk/salvage yards that let me go in and remove the parts myself, I could spend a happy afternoon knowing I’d be louder than when I came in.

Having just missed an accident by mere inches, I’m in the right frame of mind for a scare the shit out of everyone horn. Maybe one that triggers a code brown every time it’s used. Seriously, I’m pissed...

What do you want a part number for? Google will give you most of them.

P.S: Most vehicles run a high note and a low note horn. You sure one of yours isn’t dead/unplugged/poor ground?

Looks like the 2016 Tundra has a dual-tone horn. I cannot verify if these use the same plug as the Matrix.
86510-0C090 High Pitched. Amazon Linky
86520-0C060 Low Pitched. Amazon Linky
2016-pres Tacoma shows two different types of horns for a high and low tone
86510-04020 OR 86510-0E040 for the high pitch
86520-04040 OR 86520-0E020 for the low pitch
Some google searches for images might give you something you could compare to the Matrix existing horn connector.
IMO, $55-80 per horn is quite silly, probably why most opt for a universal aftermarket horn. Good luck on your quest.

I would have used a part number to order a horn that would just click right in to my existing harness w/o any cutting/splicing.
Both horns on the Matrix are working, they’re just so easy to ignore as they sound like a moped.
Thanks for the link.

Thank you! In 45 minutes I’ve received more pertinent information than I did by asking toyota for a coupla years now.

Hope it helps! FWIW, I also can’t say if these horns will be any louder than the one that you presently own, so take that for what its worth.

I should’ve worded it better, was wondering what model vehicles horn you wanted, not why ;-)

It can only get
better
louder. Remember the old VW Beetle horns?
My Matrix horn sounds something like that, in both sound and volume.

A. anything that would fit the harness, and be louder than what I have.
But, now that I’ve asked my question in the right place, I have a much better idea of what I can & will do.
